The Tombs of the Kings are a collection of rock cut tombs in East Jerusalem. The grandeur of the site led to the mistaken belief that the tombs had once been the burial place of the kings of Judah, hence the name Tombs of the Kings; but the tombs are now believed to be the burial site of Queen Helene of Adiabene (a convert to Judaism, who died in 56 AD). They are located 820 meters north of Jerusalem's Old City walls in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood. This image was part of a book that was sold as a souvenir for the increasing number of tourists flocking to the Holy Land in the late 19th century. This book paired photographs of sacred places with collages of dried flowers from the sites | |
