A preserved human foot with smallpox blisters on exhibit at the National Museum of Health and Science in Silver Spring,MD,2012. A smallpox scab had to be removed (leaving a small square incision near the heel) and tested by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to make sure the preserved foot was not infectious. Although there is no cure for smallpox, there is a vaccination. In the 19th and 20th centuries vaccination campaigns eradicated smallpox in 1979 with the last known case having been diagnosed on October 26,1977 | |
