This axial (cross sectional) T1-weighted MRI image of the brain of a child demonstrates multiple congenital malformations of development. Whenever there is one malformation there are often multiple malformations. This is a case of bilateral perisylvian syndrome characterized by abnormal clefts of the brain lined by malformed cortex. The cortical maldevelopment represents polymicrogyria a type of neuronal migration anomaly. There is also absence of the septum pellucidum and heterotopic grey matter (grey matter where it doesn't belong). Also present is an arachnoid cyst | |
