This colour enhanced axial (cross sectional) MR image of the head in a newborn shows extensive intracranial injury secondary to severe birth related injury. There is a large subdural hematoma (crescent shaped multi-coloured density) along the right cerebral hemisphere (on viewers left) causing herniation of brain across the midline which is compressing the brainstem. This results in enlargement of the left lateral ventricle. Acute blood is seen in the bottom of the lateral ventricle at the lower right aspect of the image (black density with a straight line) | |
