Colour enhanced scanning electron microscope of the fungus microsporum gypseum. This fungus is the cause of ringworm and one of several dermatophyte fungal species that infect humans. The cylindrical spore-producing structures (macroconidia) are seen connected by hyphal filaments. M. gypseum is found in the soil. Gardener's hands can become infected,as well as the underarms. It also causes ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis) giving rise to round scaly lesions with hair loss, mainly in children. It is spread by contact with fungal spores. SEM Magnification: 800x | |
