In a state of rest,the body will naturally pull blood out of circulation and pool it in the deep veins of the lower legs,so the heart doesn't have to pump the full volume of blood. In a sitting position,the veins are pinched at the knee and a large,jelly like clot can form in the deep veins of the upper calf. A DVT results in calf pain,redness,and swelling. A DVT is diagnosed by ultrasound of the deep veins. Activity can cause this clot to break-off and rise up into the larger veins on the way to the heart.
