Molecular model of Imatinib (C29 H31 N7 O). Imatinib is part of a new class of drugs used in the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML),gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) and a number of other malignancies. It acts by specifically inhibiting an enzyme (a receptor tyrosine kinase) that is characteristic of a particular cancer cell,rather than non-specifically inhibiting and killing all rapidly dividing cells.
