An illustration of TIC10,a small molecule that has the ability to activate genes for the protein TRAIL (tumour-necrosis-factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand). TRAIL is a component of the immune system which triggers apoptosis,or programmed cell death,in cancerous cells to prevent tumours from forming and metastasizing. TIC10 is shown to be particularly effective against brain tumours since it is small enough to pass through the blood-brain barrier,an obstacle which has block anti-cancer drugs from reaching the brain through the circulatory system.
