The collagenous disks that are interposed between the vertebrae of the spine act as shock absorbers and most of the body load is transmitted through them. If a disk ruptures (prolapses),it may come to press on a nerve,causing localized pain. A common misconception is that disks can slip ,when in fact they burst and their gelatinous content is forced through the tough outer sheath that would normally contain it. When the rupture occurs lower down the spine the pain seems to come from the back or legs.
