Asteroid 2005 YU55 streaks through the sky as it passes inside the Moon's orbit on the night of closest approach. The Near Earth Object (NEO) is 400 meters in diameter and passed the Earth at a distance of about 201,700 miles (85% of the distance to the Moon). This series of 30-second exposures was made with the telescope tracking on the stellar background while the asteroid passed through the constellation of Pegasus from 03:21:33 UT to 03:27:47 UT on November 9,2011 (10:21:33 p.m. to 10:27:47 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on November 8,2011). The asteroid left a series of streaks as it moved during each time exposure | |
