This male Short-nosed Fruit Bat (Cynopterus sphinx) is guarding his harem. He is roosting apart from the rest. Males of this species cut the leaves of fan palms, making them droop to form tents attractive to females. These bats occupy a wide variety of habitats where they feed on fruit and nectar. They are major pollinators and seed dispersers for many of Southeast Asia's most economically important plants, for example pollinating wild bananas, durian and petai. This species ranges from India and Sri Lanka across Southeast Asia to the Malay Peninsula and southern China,Borneo,Java,Samatra and nearby islands. It is highly adaptable to habitat alteration, even living in large cities. These are in Hong Kong's Morse Park, surrounded by highrise | |
