The Pomona leaf-nosed Bat (Hipposideros pomona) ranges throughout most of Southeast Asia, from India and Sri Lanka to peninsular Malaysia and southern China. It seems quite tolerant of habitat modification and is sometimes found even in urban areas, though little is know about its ecology and behavior. It normally forms small colonies in caves or cave-like locations and is insectivorous. Members of this genus often hunt near the ground, feeding on beetles, cockroaches and termites. The large ears likely facilitate listening for insect sounds when hunting, and the strange nose is adapted for nasal transmission of echolocation. Hong Kong,China | |
