Meiosis. Light micrograph of a locust (Locus testis) cell during interphase, the stage between meiotic divisions. During meiosis four daughter nuclei are formed from one parent nucleus after two stages of nuclear division. Meiosis occurs only in the sex cells (gametes) of the testes and ovaries. During interphase the chromosomes, which are made of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA,dark),are contained within the cell nucleus (centre). Also seen in the nucleus is the nucleolus (black circle). Interphase is a period of cell growth and synthesis of new organelles. Magnification: x1,500 when printed at 10 centimetres tall | |
