Fossil fish (Mioplosus labracoides) aspiration plate. Here a fossil Mioplosus from the perch family is choking/swallowing a fossil fish in the Knightia genus. There is much debate as to whether aspiration plates are examples of predation or an example of a small fish becoming lodged in the mouth of a larger fish in a low water area of a pond or lake. Fossil aspiration plates such as this example from the Eocene are extremely rare. The Mioplosus on this plate is approximately 120mm long. Green River Formation,Wyoming | |
