Dhahran,Saudi Arabia,February 5,1991. Cluster bombs (in white) are prepared for loading onto American Harrier jets flown by US Marines. The bombs were dropped onto Iraqi troops occupying positions in the Kuwaiti desert and Southern Iraq during the Persian Gulf War,also known as Desert Storm. The green-colored bombs in the background are 1,000 pound bombs. Because cluster bombs release many small bomblets over a wide area, they pose problems both during attacks and afterwards. During attacks the weapons are prone to indiscriminate effects, especially in populated areas. After a conflict unexploded bomblets can kill or maim civilians long after a conflict has ended. Unexploded submunitions are very costly to locate and remove | |
