Supporting prop roots at base of a Sierra palm,Prestoea montana (Prestoea acuminata is an invalid synonym). The sierra palm is a dominant rainforest tree in Puerto Rico and other West Indian islands, and often grows on steep hillsides, such as here in the El Yunque Forest Preserve,Puerto Rico, where the prop roots help give it stability. The large leaves at the base of the tree are from a species of cecropia tree. Photo taken at El Yunque National Forest,Siera de Luquilllo,Puerto Rico | |
