The Black Piranha or Red Eye Piranha,Serrasalmus rhombeus,is more silver or grey than black as a juvenile. This species has been known as Serrasalmus niger in the past but the two fish are now considered the same species. This is one of the most widespread piranha species ranging through the Amazon and its tributaries, through the Orinoco Drainage, and through many of the rivers of the Guiana Shield. These fish are often exported for the aquarium trade. This specimen was photographed in the Peruvian Amazon 2010 | |
