Bulbophyllum spiesii is a large orchid native to the forest canopies of Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. It is an epiphyte, growing on trees without parasitizing them. This species produces pseudobulbs and a carrion flower. Carrion flowers emit a pungent odour resembling decaying flesh,to attract flies and carrion beetles. Flies and carrion beetles are the primary pollinators for the plant. Photographed in 2009 | |
