Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier,French chemist (1743-1794). After Englishman Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774,Lavoisier started examining its properties and those of air. He proposed a totally new theory which explained both the formation of metal oxides and allowed for the reactions which occur when burning wood or candles. Lavoisier came from a wealthy family.
