Colorless or white light as perceived by human eye actually consists of many colors or wavelengths of light. In this photo a beam of white light is incident from lower left corner onto a reflection diffraction grating. A diffraction grating is an optical element whose properties (ex. reflectivity) are periodically modulated in one dimension. Diffracted light propagates along discrete directions, called diffraction orders. Some light is reflected like from a normal mirror (zeroth order) and does not exhibit dispersion (white beam). Some light is diffracted into the first diffraction order and is dispersed (decomposed) into different colors | |
