Female Pyrrhuloxia (Cardinalis sinuatus),Sonoran Desert,Arizona. Female Pyrrhuloxia are a grayish brown,and are sometimes mistaken for the female Northern Cardinal. They have red highlights on the thighs and the wing linings. The bill is heavy and hooked in both male and female Pyrrhuloxia. In the female,the bill is a dull yellow. Both male and female have the diagnostic tall crest on the head. They inhabit arid habitats such as mesquite thickets and desert creek beds in the southwest United States and northern Mexico | |
