A series of coronary angiograms of a patient with stenosis of the right coronary artery,(RCA),showing repair using the technique of balloon angioplasty. Balloon angioplasty is a procedure in which long, thin tube with a deflated balloon at the tip,(a balloon-tipped catheter),is advanced into the blocked coronary artery. When the catheter is within the narrowed segment of the artery, the balloon is rapidly inflated, pushing the plaque in the artery back against the wall of the artery. A wire mesh tube,(a stent),is then permanently implanted to hold the artery open. In the first image,(upper left),the blocked area of the artery is highlighted in yellow. The stent,(blue),is placed unexpanded in the artery,(upper right). It is then expanded,(lower left),within the area of stenosis in the RCA. In the image on the lower right,a bolus of contrast material is ejected from the catheter,(purple),and passes through the stented portion of the artery and continues to fill the entire RCA | |
