A MRI of the lumbar spine on a 29 year old female who developed back pain after bending over. The MRI scan shows herniated, bulging discs. At the level of L5-S1,there is a large central and right paracentral disc extrusion compatible with a herniated nucleus pulposus, compressing the right S1 nerve root. At L4-L5,there is mild broad-based central disc protrusion. L4,L5 refer to the 4rth and 5th lumbar vertebrae. S1 refers to the first sacral vertebra. This patient was diagnosed with Cauda equina syndrome,(CES),which is low back pain, sciatica, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and motor and sensory loss in the legs due to compression of a bulging disc on the cauda equina, the nerve roots distal to the level of spinal cord termination | |
