Longlure Anglerfish,Antennarius multiocellatus. Anglerfish, also known as frogfish, are most peculiar and cryptic in appearance. Rarely swimming, they prefer to ''walk'' along the bottom using their limb-like pectoral and ventral fins. In addition,a highly modified dorsal fin ray resembling bait (the stalk with the white tuft on top of its head) is waved back and forth to attract prey. When not being used,as in this picture,it rests along the dorsal surface of the head. The coloration of anglerfish can be very variable even within a single species. This species can be solid black, red, yellow,or brown or any combination of them all, with a variable number of eyespots on its body and fins. The longlure anglerfish inhabits coral reefs of the western Tropical Atlantic. It is a small species, rarely exceeding 6 inches in length. CC | |
