Wulfenite, lead molybdate,is one of the most prized of all collector minerals. It occurs worldwide in the oxidation zone of lead and zinc deposits, formed due to the action of late-stage molybdenum-bearing solutions. Its crystals are distinctive, sometimes bypyramidal, but generally flat wafer-like tablets. The color of wulfenite is spectacular, ranging from yellowish, brownish and orange to various shades of red. Crystals are seldom large but are generally sharp and well-formed. Among the best known localities are various mines in Mexico, and many in Arizona, such as the Rowley Mine at Theba,Arizona, where wafer-thin wulfenite crystals occur with balls of orange mimetite and other species | |
