Spessartine is magnesium manganese silicate and a member of the large garnet family. Spessartine, due to its manganese content, typically displays a strong orange or red-orange hue. The exact color varies greatly with locality, the most prominent of which are in Nigeria,Namibia,Brazil and California. A most unusual occurrence at Amelia,Virginia has produced extraordinary crystals, some as large as 3 inches across. Unlike most garnet crystals, the ones from Virginia are irregular and display prominent growth surfaces. Spessartine is now an important gem material | |
