Amethyst is the violet or purple variety of the common and ubiquitous mineral, quartz. Quartz (rock crystal) is silicon oxide (silica) and the most frequent major component of beach sands. It is found all over the world in many different rock types, often in large and well-formed crystals. Pure quartz is colorless and can be melted (with other ingredients) to manufacture glass. Minor impurities create myriad hues, most of which are popular for use in jewelry. The purple variety, amethyst,is one of the most valuable, and good crystals are known from many localities, including Vera Cruz,Mexico; others that are notable include Brazil,Nigeria,Tanzania,Arizona and Russia | |
