Malachite, copper carbonate, occurs throughout the world in and around copper deposits. It forms out of copper-rich solutions, and the resulting material is therefore often layered,or banded. In Zaire the copper deposits are quite large and the surrounding area of malachite mineralization is enormous. The malachite from this locality is unique in its compactness and variety of formations, including reniform and stalactitic masses. Many of these when cut open have circular cross-sections and are called 'bulls eye' malachite | |
