Gypsum, hydrated calcium sulfate,is a common and abundant mineral throughout the world. It occurs near ore deposits,in massive beds,in caves, and in veins where hot mineral solutions have cooled or evaporated. Gypsum cave formations sometimes look like floral arrays, but single crystals and groups are known from a number of localities. At Cherokee Flats,Oklahoma, the gypsum has crystallized just under the surface of the ground. As the crystals grew they incorporated grains of sand, which now make up nearly half the weight of the material. This kind of material is called 'sand selenite' and is very distinctive | |
