Germination of clover seeds,Trifolium sp. ,showing the development of numerous root hairs from the parent root. Visible also are the dicotyledons (two seed leaves),which supply the embryo & young seedling with food until the leaves appear & photosynthesis begins. What appear to be leaves in this photograph are the cotyledons. The dark brown husks halfway up the stems are seed coats. A tough outer covering, the seed coat protects the cotyledons & embryo from descication and mechanical damage in the dormant period between dispersal & germination. Once the seed absorbs water & the root begins to grow the seed coat splits open and is shed | |
