Ragweed pollen. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of pollen grains of the ragweed plant Ambrosia sp. The grains of pollen (blue) have a spiked surface appearance. Ambrosia is a daisy- like flower found growing in bare and waste ground. Its pollen acts as an allergen causing hay fever (pollenosis) in allergic individuals. Hay fever is the most common of allergies, occurring when certain types of pollen or mould spores are inhaled. The sufferer produces a sensitising antibody on the surface of cells in the nose and eyes. This antibody reacts to ragweed pollen by causing inflammation of the linings of the nose and throat, and a watering of the eyes | |
