Desert barrel cactus flower. Macrophotograph of a desert barrel cactus flower (Ferocactus acanthodes),showing its stamens and carpels. The shorter stamens (male reproductive parts) consist of a pollen-bearing anther (yellow speck) on top of a stalk-like filament (red). The taller carpels (female reproductive parts, centre) are fertilized by pollen that lands on the carpel tips (stigmas) and transfers its genetic material down the slender styles to the ovaries. The desert barrel cactus inhabits arid regions of Mexico and south- western USA. It is ribbed and spiny, and can grow to heights of up to 3 metres.
