Welwitschia plant. Welwitschia plant (Welwitschia mirabilis) at dusk. This succulent has just two large leaves during its entire lifetime. These become frayed over time by the wind,as here. Its cones (lower right) are involved in reproduction. Growing in the desert, the welwitschia collects water from the foggy air which moves into the desert from the coast on most days. Welwitschias may live for hundreds of years. They are found near to the coast from central Namibia up to southern Angola. Photographed in Namib-Naukluft Game Park,Namibia | |
