Venus flytrap (image 3 to 3). Cricket trapped inside the leaf of a Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). The insect moved onto one of the lobes of this hinged leaf triggering touch-sensitive hairs on its inner surface that caused it to snap shut. Trapped behind the interlocking spines, the cricket is being digested by enzymes. This plant is native to the bogs of South and North Carolina,USA. Its carnivorous diet provides it with nutrients that it could not otherwise obtain from the poor soils in which it grows. For a sequence showing the cricket being captured see images B610/153-155 | |
