Anabaena algae. Light micrograph of filaments of living Anabaena sp.,a type of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). Anabaena filaments occur on grass and in freshwater pools and sediments. They photosynthesize sunlight to make food. Anabaena can also form larger,thick-walled cells called heterocysts which specialise in converting (fixing) atmospheric nitrogen to organic forms. Nitrogen is an essential biological nutrient and so Anabaena are valuable to farmers,as they increase soil fertility and crop yields. However, these algae also contain potent poisons which can affect animals which consume them. Phase contrast. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size | |
