Anabaena azollae. Light micrograph of a section through a leaf of the fern azolla, revealing the cyanobacteria (blue-green algae),Anabaena azollae. Anabaena (red, centre) forms a symbiotic relationship with the water fern Azolla. This benefits both species,as the photosynthesis rate is doubled and the nitrogen requirements of the plant are fulfilled internally. These factors give the water fern a competitive advantage over other water plants. This was first noticed by the Chinese around 2000 years ago. The Anabaena- Azolla association is used as a green manure for rice crops. Brightfield illumination. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size | |
