Fischerella musicola. Light micrograph of the cyanobacteria Fischerella musicola. Cyanobacteria are unique amongst bacteria in that they possess chlorophyll and carry out photosynthesis. They are also known as blue-green algae. They live in water, and divide in more than one plane, leading to the formation of filamentous clusters,as seen here. Cyanobacteria are not directly pathogenic in any organism, but some may produce toxins which can cause illness and even death. Fischerella musicola are thermophilic, meaning their optimum growth temperature is above 45 degrees celsius. These conditions occur around hot springs, for example. Magnification: x25 at 35mm size | |
