Anabaena algae. Light micrograph of filaments of Anabaena sp.,a blue-green alga or cyanobacterium that can absorb (fix) atmospheric nitrogen. Filaments of Anabaena occur on grass and in freshwater pools and sediments. They convert sunlight into food by means of photosynthetic membranes (chloroplasts). Anabaena can also form larger,thick-walled cells called heterocysts which specialise in fixing nitrogen,an essential biological nutrient. Anabaena is valuable to farmers, increasing soil fertility and hence crop yields. However, these algae also contain potent poisons which can affect animals which consume it.
