Micrasterias alga. Artwork based on a light micrograph of Micrasterias sp.,a desmid. Desmids are unicellular green algae with intricately- shaped cell walls and symmetrical shapes. Micrasterias is a placoderm desmid in which each cell is divided into 2 semi-cells joined by a narrow region known as the isthmus (centre). Cell division occurs when the cell splits at the isthmus, each half generating a replica of itself to restore the original shape. The new half cell (at lower left) is still growing.
