Earth star mushroom (Geastrum saccatum) growing in woodland soil. The outer wall of the puffball has split open to allow the dispersal of reproductive spores from the sac inside. The spores are released into the air by a 'puffing' mechanism. This mushroom is the fruiting body of a rare fungus that feeds on decaying vegetable matter. Photographed in Pennsylvania,USA | |
