Coccidioides immitis fungus. Phase contrast light micrograph of hyphae of the fungus Coccidioides immitis. The hyphae are the long thin filaments. This fungus causes the disease known as coccidioidomycosis or "Valley Fever". It occurs in desert and semi arid regions. The route of infection is almost always pulmonary,due to inhalation of the spores. Agricultural workers are particularly at risk from this infection.
