Salmonellae belong to the Enterobacteriaceae family. They are Gram-negative,rod-shaped,motile bacteria that inhabit the gut. The Salmonella genus includes S. typhi & S. paratyphi,responsible for typhoid & paratyphoid fevers in humans. Other serotypes are responsible for gastroenteritis or food poisoning.
