Newly-synthesized proteins in the cell,folding into their correct shapes in order to function properly. The enzyme UDP-glucose glycosyltransferase (UGGT) monitors folding in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of the cell. In this illustration,a UGGT enzyme (purple) checks new proteins (blue,upper left) for proper conformation,by examining specific indicator molecules (green,pink) attached to the proteins. Correctly-folded proteins are approved (right),while misfolded proteins (bottom) are degraded and their components are recycled
