Thermite reaction. Demonstration of the thermite reaction between powdered aluminium and iron oxide. Aluminium (Al) removes the oxygen atoms from the iron oxide (Fe2O3). The heat needed to start the reaction is usually provided by a magnesium fuse. The equation for the reaction is: 2Al + Fe2O3 ----> Al2O3 + 2Fe This reaction produces much heat. It is used in incendiary weapons and in underwater welding | |
