Electron displacement reaction. If a metal strip is placed in a solution of ions of a metal of lower electronegativity,the strip metal will displace the ions in solution. In this case,the metal strip is zinc (electronegativity = 3. 0) and the solution is copper sulphate (copper = 2. 6). The zinc loses electrons to form zinc ions,these displace the copper ions from solution by making them combine with electrons to form metallic copper.
