Refraction of an image caused by water. The image of the straw in this soft drink has been displaced from that suggested by the straw's position. This is due to the refractive power of the water in the drink. As the water refracts ('bends') light more than air,the image of the straw below the surface has been 'bent' away from its true position. The shape of the glass also alters the optical properties, making the displacement greater as the slope of the side of the glass increases. Thus the straw appears to be bent, when in reality it is straight | |
