The excavated cavern for the L3 particle detector, photographed in 1987. L3 will be one of 4 major detectors at the new LEP (Large Electron- Positron) collider, due to start work in 1989 at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. The giant detector will consist of a number of sub-detectors,including a central tracking chamber, lepton & hadron calorimeters,& muon tracking chambers. These will be surrounded by a magnet consisting of 8500 tonnes of iron & standing 15. 8 metres high & 16 metres long. LEP's circular underground ring,27 km in circumference, will be the largest scientific instrument ever built | |
