Latex. Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a freeze fractured solution of latex. Latex is a fluid product of flowering plants, characteristically exuding from cut surfaces as a milky juice. Although it's function is poorly understood,it known to be a complex emulsion made up of proteins, alkaloids, starches, sugars, oils, resins, gums and tannins. It rapidly coagulates when exposed to air. Latex of several species is collected and used in the manufacture of several commercial products, the most important being rubber. Magnification: x2500 at 8x10 inch size | |
