Unicorn. The unicorn is an imaginary animal similar to a horse, with a single horn growing from its forehead. The myth of the unicorn is found throughout world legends and can be traced back to early pagan mythology. Despite its origins, the unicorn was accepted in Medival Europe and came to symbolise purity and holiness. The animal was also used as a symbol of Christ. It is thought that the myth derived from explorers returning home with the tusk of the narwhal (Monodon monoceros),which closely resembles the unicorn's horn. Another theory is that sightings of the rhinoceros helped to encourage this myth in Europe | |
