Capercaillie. Illustration of an extinct race of capercaillie (Tetrao uroqallus,a type of grouse) native to the UK. This race disappeared around 1780 and was replaced by a Swedish race introduced into Scotland in 1838. The capercaillie is a solitary bird that lives in forests. Adult males measure around a metre in length (making the species the largest game bird in Europe) and have a distinct mating call and courtship ritual in which they leap into the air flapping their wings.
